Food Preparation with Toddlers: Bircher Muesli

Bircher muesli is an easy recipe that is perfect for toddlers who have already mastered peeling and cutting a banana. This can be set up as an independent activity for breakfast or snack time and makes enough for serves two.

Snack time!

  • 2 tablespoons cream (30 milliliters), optional
  • 1 small apple, grated

  • Set out the ingredients on a low bench along with a mixing bowl (1 litre capacity), mixing spoon, chopping board, and toddler knife.
Setup

Method

  • In a mixing bowl combine all of the ingredients except the banana.
  • Peel and chop the banana then add it to the mixture and stir.
  • Let the Bircher muesli sit while tidying up and setting the table.

Make it easier

  • Have the banana ready chopped so they just have to mix everything together.
  • Give the banana to chop only once all the other ingredients have been mixed.

Make it harder

  • Use fresh berries and have the child wash them first.
  • Work together and have the child measure out the ingredients.

Tips

  • The almonds, sunflower seeds and linseeds can be exchanged for any combination of nuts and seeds.
