Food Preparation with Toddlers: Peeling eggs

Peeling eggs is a quick and easy activity to have on hand for toddlers plus it makes a wonderful fine motor activity.

All you need is a boiled egg and two bowls: one for the egg and another for the egg shell. Tap the egg gently on the table to break the shell and then see if the toddler wants to have a go. Demonstrate peeling off a few pieces of shell and dropping them into the bowl. Step back and let the toddler do the rest. When done the egg shells go in the bin and the rest in the designated spot for dirty dishes.

Tips

  • Brown eggs and coloured eggs are easier for toddlers to peel as they can clearly distinguish the shell from the egg white. White eggs can be more difficult.
  • If possible have the toddler watch you cook the egg.
  • The toddler might like to eat the egg as is or it can be used later to go in a salad or on a snack place.
